This chapter examines how a three-way division among English objects, distinguishing 2 objects, 3 objects, and 4 objects (each of which can occur as a single object) simplifies and regularizes the statement of facts about English grammar and considers a variety of distributional data that are related to, but do not just follow from, the three-way object division. It agrees with the notion that English clausal syntax can be properly characterized only by adopting this distinction. The chapter first describes the overall structure of periphrastic passives before turning to clause union complement passives. It then looks at clauses that only look like periphrastic passives, Peruvian Spanish 3-object-to-2 advancement, passive victim arc constraints, middles as synthetic passives, antipassives, and adjectival clauses.
